Alpines

As the name suggests, alpines are plants which originated in mountainous and other rocky locations at high altitude. Generally low-growing, alpines come in a dazzling range of species and are the plant of choice for a rock garden – the classic ‘rockery’ - where the form and colour of stone provides the perfect foil for the foliage and flowers of the plants.

The fun part of planting a collection of alpines is creating just the right environment for them – pockets of free-draining gritty soil set among large and small rocks in a sunny spot. Because of their origins, alpines survive the harshest of winters.
