Succulents

Succulents come in many shapes, colours and sizes. They originate in arid parts of the world where water is scarce. Their fleshy, sometimes bulbous, leaves having evolved to store nutrients for times of drought. Some have succulent leaves, either growing on stems or forming rosettes. Other species have succulent stems, fulfilling the same purpose of water storage.

In warmer parts of the country and sheltered city gardens, a wide range of Succulents can be grown successfully outside. These bring a touch of the exotic to the garden and are one of the ultimate plants to add architectural interest. They require full sun and free-draining soil. As winter arrives these plants may need to be wrapped for winter protection. Alternatively, container-planted species can be moved under cover.
