Cordon Training our grapevine
Posted By: Category: Design, Plant CareOur handsome grapevine has been created using the ‘rod and spur’ system, otherwise known as ‘cordon training’. This method is suitable for a wall or fence, as well as over an arch or pergola - or even built into the architecture, like with our toilet block.
We followed a 3-year pruning regime to ensure a healthy root system and productive growth. Find out more on the RHS website: rod and spur pruning system
The variety we used is ‘Dornfelder’, which is a hardy outdoor variety. It is a heavy cropper and produces stunning autumn leaf colour. The grapes are very edible and offers the best flavour for desserts, winemaking, and juice (try telling the birds!) Each Winter we will prune to keep the vine tidy and productive.
