Perennials: ‘Plants whose growth dies down annually but whose roots or other underground parts survive.’ These are the classic plants for herbaceous borders where careful planting will ensure a succession of flowers from early spring to the first frosts of winter.
Once established, herbaceous perennials need little maintenance apart from dead-heading to prolong flowering, and the flower stems and foliage removing at the end of the season. Some varieties will benefit from being lifted and the roots divided every few years to prevent overcrowding. You will then end up with additional plants for elsewhere in your garden – or to give to your friends!
